A new survey says City of San Diego workers have serious doubts about ethical standards in their workplace. In response, city officials say they want to improve those standards. KPBS Radio’s Andrew Phelps has more.
The Ethics Resource Center in Washington surveyed the workforce at the city’s request. Forty-one percent reported witnessing ethical misconduct at work. That’s almost twice the national average. And more than half of the respondents say they’re dissatisfied with the city’s response to reported misconduct. Jo Anne SawyerKnoll is head of San Diego’s Office of Ethics and Integrity. She says the results are discouraging but helpful.
SawyerKnoll: We are going to set up our training efforts to include specific education about employee concerns and how city managers can effectively respond to them. There’s a lot going on. We are committed to following up on everything we’ve learned in this survey.
Starting in January, top-level managers will get ethics training. SawyerKnoll says by summer of next year, every city employee will get the same training. For KPBS, I’m Andrew Phelps.
