Solana Beach Residents to Vote on House Size Limit

Voters in Solana Beach decide Tuesday on a measure that would limit the size of homes in certain neighborhoods.  KPBS Reporter Ed Joyce tells us the measure is designed to prevent larger homes compared to the size of their property.

The Neighborhood Preservation Ordinance or Proposition A would limit the size of homes in six residential areas west of I-5. There aren't that many super-sized homes in those neighborhoods now. But the Solana Beach City Council wants to keep home sizes in proportion with their lot sizes. Solana Beach Mayor Lesa Heebner.

Heebner: People are complaining there were houses going in next to them were too large. Our current development codes allow for that and we're simply fixing those codes so that the neighborhood character and the sense of privacy and space that we have all bought into and love about Solana Beach is preserved.

Opponents say private property rights and home values will suffer if the ordinance is approved. A simple majority of Solana Beach voters is needed for the measure to pass. Ed Joyce, KPBS News.
