San Diego's Silenced FBI Chief Resigns

San Diego's FBI chief is resigning. Dan Dzwilewski publicly supported former U.S. Attorney Carol Lam after she was fired. KPBS Radio's Andrew Phelps reports.

Dzwilewski will leave the FBI in April for a job at Sempra Energy. A spokesman says his retirement was already in the works -- and has nothing to do with his comments about Lam.

After Lam was fired, Dzwilewski told The San Diego Union-Tribune: "I guarantee politics was involved."

FBI and Justice Department brass in Washington tried to hush Dzwilewski, saying his comments were inappropriate.

Those comments came up on Capitol Hill. California Senator Dianne Feinstein prodded Kyle Samson, the former chief of staff for Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

Feinstein : Did you call FBI headquarters and complain about those comments?

Samson : I did.

Just last month, Gonzales presented Dzwilewski with the highest award for government employees. For KPBS, I'm Andrew Phelps.
