The San Diego school board is expected to make some final decisions on three key budget items on Tuesday. KPBS reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
School board members met last month to take a close look at the items. They include a $1.8 million plan to hire 40 new landscapers, $65,000 to create a Junior ROTC program at Mission Bay High School, and half a million dollars to open a truancy center for at-risk youth.
School board member Katherine Nakarmua says she won't support hiring all the new landscapers. She believes the district would cut costs by hiring just 20 and investing in new equipment.
Meanwhile, trustee John De Beck is expected to vote no on Mission Bay's Junior ROTC program. He says district administrators didn't get community support to sign off on the program.
The Truancy Center is the item with the largest pricetag. Trustee Sheila Jackson has suggested housing the center at the old Gompers High School to cut costs.
