Moth Invasion Should Be Over Soon

San Diego County's winter rains are getting the blame for a massive swarm of insects. Thousands of moths, butterflies and long-legged crane flies have been spreading across the county this past week.

San Diego County's winter rains are getting the blame for a massive swarm of insects. Thousands of moths, butterflies and long-legged crane flies have been spreading across the county this past week. While the bugs may splat on your car windshield, the county's entomologist David Kellum says not to worry.

Kellum: We are asking people not to panic, not to go out and use a lot of pesticides. Simply because it's not necessary this is a short term. What you are seeing is that you get a lot of larvae, a lot of caterpillars and things around. And other insects come to feed on them and other animals come to feed there too.

He says the moths are not pests.

Kellum says the invasion will be over in a couple of weeks. He says winter rains were ideal for plant growth, which increased the insect population.
