Tom Fudge :San Diego, and the rest of the nation, has seen a drop in violent crime during the past two decades. In fact, last year the violent crime rate in the San Diego region reached a 25-year low.
Homicides were down 17 percent from the previous year. That's the good news. The bad news is that gang violence increased. Of the 88 homicides that occured last year in San Diego, in which a motive could be established, nearly half of them were related to gang activity.
The prevalence of gang activity continues to be a concern in many neighborhoods in the City of San Diego and in some suburban neighborhoods as well.
The "Stand Together for Youth" Community Convention is Sunday, October 12, 2008, beginning at 1pm with a march from Chicano Park in Barrio Logan.
