Supporters of San Diego Unified's multibillion dollar school bond measure say the economic downturn has affected their fundraising efforts. Even so, they've managed to raise more than $800,000. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
Eight years ago, organizers raised more than 1.8 million for Proposition MM , a school bond measure aimed at building new schools.
But organizers are not so lucky this year.
They've raised just over $800,000 for
Prop. S
, San Diego Unified's $2.1 billion school bond measure on the November ballot. The measure is designed to fix and renovate 180 schools.
Campaign manager Larry Reemer says the money has gone towards TV ads and mailers.
Reemer:
A bond of this size, with this size constituency, should have raised a $1.2 million or a million dollars in normal economic times. The economy has hurt fundraising. We are trying to raise what we can and spend it as effectively as we can.
One of the top donors to the campaign is
Qualcomm founder Irwin Jacobs
.
Two anti-tax crusaders
have voiced their opposition to Prop. S, however there is no organized group opposing the measure. No money has been raised to combat the Prop. S campaign.
