It's hard for the uninsured to see a doctor, let alone get needed surgery. But thanks to a host of medical volunteers, 19 uninsured San Diegans will get free surgical procedures this Saturday. KPBS Reporter Kenny Goldberg has more.
A wide range of surgeries will be performed, from gall bladder removals to cataract repairs. More than 100 volunteers, including surgeons and nurses, will donate their time.
The effort is a collaboration between Kaiser Permanente and the San Diego County Medical Society Foundation.
Foundation president Carol Young helped coordinate the event.
Dr. Carol Young: As a physician, this is what I went to medical school for. This is so meaningful to me. It's what really most of us became doctors in order to do. To provide care for those who need it.
Dr. Young says the 19 patients were referred by community clinics. She says there are thousands of people in the community who need help but can't get it.
