San Diego will start telling residents this summer how much water they can use before being fined. And Mayor Jerry Sanders is asking for the public’s input on how to develop a fair allocation system. KPBS reporter Katie Orr has details.
The Mayor says he’s anticipating the city’s major provider will cut San Diego’s water supply by 20 percent. There will be three workshops in February so the public can weigh in on how an allocation system should work to cope with the reduction. Sanders says one of the priorities will be acknowledging people who already cut back on water usage.
Sanders: That’s the biggest debates we have had, is how you recognize those who have traditionally conserved water. They didn’t wait until this year to start conserving. And you can look at what an average family uses and you can tell people who have been conserving.
Sanders says once an allocation plan is formulated it would most likely be implemented July first. But he says residents should try to reduce their water usage right now.
