San Ysidro High School is earning top honors for having the largest number of students passing an advanced level Spanish Literature course. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
The New York-based College Board is praising San Ysidro High for being the only high school in the country where its students consistently earn top scores on the Advance Placement Spanish Literature exam.
College Board officials say the course itself is much more specialized compared to other AP classes. They are also more rigorous because students need to have a mastery of Spanish.
Teacher Leticia Oseguera says most of her students have ties to Mexico. She says they're curious about the Latino world around them.
Oseguera
: They find it very interesting to see that this author is from Colombia, this author is from Chile, and Cuba. And it just expands their world and they want to know more.
College Board officials say San Ysidro's accomplishment is even more impressive because less than 15 percent of Latino students take AP courses in the U-S.
