The recession is spreading pain throughout California. But UCSD Medical School says it's hanging tough. In fact, the school has expansion plans in the works. KPBS Reporter Kenny Goldberg has more.
Next week, UCSD Medical School will present a plan for a new research building to the Board of Regents. Construction of a new medical education building has already been approved. But its funding is on hold due to the state budget crunch.
Tom Jackiewicz is UCSD's vice chancellor for health services.
"I would say right now we're challenged, but we're not in bad shape," Jackiewicz says. "I think we're still on solid footing, but we see challenges ahead, and you know, we're trying to do our best to weather those."
Last year, the medical school had 55-hundred applicants for 134 spots.
U-C Riverside plans to open its new medical school in 2012. The campus hopes to eventually house up to 400 medical students and residents.
