A military pilot who ejected from a crippled fighter over a San Diego neighborhood "screamed in horror" when he saw the jet had crashed into a home.
A statement by the pilot released Tuesday describes how he struggled to control the malfunctioning F/A-18D Hornet in the minutes before the Dec. 8 accident that killed four people and incinerated two homes.
In the statement the pilot writes, "I screamed in horror when I realized what had just happened."
Marines say the crash was caused by mechanical failure and bad decisions that led the pilot to bypass a potentially safe landing.
