San Diego’s Airport Authority is moving forward with plans to expand on the south side of Lindbergh Field . But officials are also considering the Destination Lindbergh concept which would move many airport operations to the north. KPBS reporter Katie Orr explains.
The Airport Authority is spending $25 million on the initial design phase of the Terminal 2 West expansion. The project will add 10 new gates and provide a space for airplanes to park overnight. It will also add a double deck roadway to separate arriving and departing passengers. Airport Spokeswoman Diana Lucero says Destination Lindbergh provides a long term vision for the airport. But she says the terminal reached capacity in 2005 and needs to be expanded now.
“And these improvements that we’re constructing through the program will take us through 2020,” she says.
The terminal upgrade is expected to cost about $877 million. The Airport Authority has agreed to wait on building a parking structure on the bay front while the Destination Lindbergh plan moves forward.
