There is so much amazing art at Comic-Con, yet it gets lost in the wake of celebrity film panels and vampire devotionals. I'm going to do my best to let you know about all the art you can view at Comic-Con, or off-site when you need a break from convention floor madness.
There are two events happening Thursday and Friday night at the Wonderhaus warehouse space downtown. Both are top priority in my book.
On Thursday, there's an exhibit featuring 25 of the best artists working in pop surrealism today. Jeff Soto's cityscape stomping robots will hang with Martha Rich's glorious afro puffs, alongside the Clayton Brothers' dense, colorful, character-driven canvases.
On Friday, same space, same artists, plus add another 25 to the list and you've got a major group exhibition of this work from all over the world. Friday night's party is also the launch of Planet Illogica, a new website for artists and creative types. It's kind of like LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, and Etsy all rolled up in one. There's some major players backing this new platform, including Tonny Sorenson of Von Dutch. It could be the next big thing and you would be there to celebrate the beginning! Apparently Tim Burton, Seth Rogen and Jennifer Connelly will be there as well, so hob nob with the celebs while you explore the exhibit. Live music will be provided by Tyler Bates who scored "300" and "Watchmen." He's put together a mash-up band that includes members of Jane's Addiction, My Chemical Romance, and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Despite all that celeb cred, I promise you the art alone will be worth your while. Oh, and Ron English will be painting on a nude model!
