Democrat Susan Davis coasted to re-election yesterday with nearly 62 percent of the vote in San Diego County’s 53rd Congressional District.
Members of the House of Representative’s new Republican majority have threatened to repeal the health care reform legislation passed earlier this year. But, Davis said she is confident about being able to hang on to changes democrats made over the last two years and hopes her Republican colleagues are more open to compromising to solve problems in education and environmental regulation.
“I’m hopeful that there will be more interest in getting the problems solved than in looking to the next election and trying to make sure Obama is defeated," she said. "Because that has been their goal, but now I think they have a greater responsibility to work for the country.”
Davis faced Republican Michael Crimmins for a second time in this election. She has represented central San Diego and the county’s southern coast since 2001.
