Camp Pendleton will hold a special ceremony on base Wednesday to award the Silver Star to Marine Maj. Sgt. David Jarvis, according to the Associated Press. The Silver Star is the military's third-highest honor for valor.
According to the AP, Jarvis earned the Silver Star for heroic actions in Afghanistan's dangerous Upper Sangin River Valley on October 25, 2010 when he saved the life of a fellow Marine who was critically injured:
[Jarvis] fend[ed] off a mass group of Taliban fighters so a medical helicopter could land and safely evacuate him... Officials say Jarvis exposed himself to a barrage of heavy machine gun fire and rocket-propelled grenades as he led Marines to hold their position in an hour-long firefight.
Jarvis is originally from Bremerton, Washington.
