RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) -- Riverside County authorities are considering a law requiring pit bulls to be spayed and neutered in the wake of a deadly mauling.
The Riverside Press-Enterprise says the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday ordered staff to draft a sterilization ordinance for pit bulls and pit bull mixes. It will come before the board at a later date.
The move follows several attacks by escaped pit bulls, including one in February that killed a 91-year-old woman in Hemet.
Animal service officials say 20 percent of the dogs in their shelters are pit bulls and the breed is rarely adopted.
Pit bull advocates say the breed has an unfair reputation for viciousness and the law should target irresponsible owners.
