The San Diego Humane Society will begin a St. Patrick's Day-themed effort Friday to find homes for more than 100 pit bulls.

The humane society will offer the adoptions for $17 through Tuesday, which includes a sample bag of dog food and having the dog spayed or neutered, microchipped and vaccinated. The "St. Pitty's Day" promotion will also help encourage responsible pit bull ownership.

"Pit bull breeds tend to remain in our care longer than other dog breeds, at no fault of their own," San Diego Humane Society CEO Dr. Gary Weitzman said.

"The purpose of this adoption promotion is to help everyone see what loving companions pit bulls can make when given the right training, care and environment. We hope to spread awareness about the breed, while also finding homes for these dogs."

Pit bulls can be adopted from any of the San Diego Humane Society's locations in San Diego, Escondido, Oceanside or at an adoption center inside the Petco in El Cajon.
