The San Diego Black Homebuyers Program was recently launched in an effort to close the racial wealth gap caused by the historic denial of homeownership for African Americans.

The San Diego Foundation, LISC San Diego and The Urban League have teamed up to provide Black homebuyers financial assistance in purchasing their first home with a $1 million grant from the Black Community Investment Fund. The nonprofits hope the seed money will lead to additional contributions to the program.

Pamela Gray Payton, who is chief impact and partnerships officer of the San Diego Foundation, joined Midday Edition Tuesday to talk about the program and its future in San Diego.
