It's not often that Scott Marks and I agree on a film but we both loved "Inglourious Basterds" (currently in San Diego area theaters). Listen to our discussion on the KPBS Film Club of the Air.
Quentin Tarantino blends Sergio Leone's spaghetti westerns with Hollywood war films to deliver something audacious and fun. Brad Pitt heads a team of Nazi killing Jewish soldiers in World War II. They end up on a mission to kill Hitler in a French movie theater. Cinema history is more relevant than real history in this case as Tarantino plays fast and loose with facts as he pays homage to the movies he loves. The Weinstein Company seemed to lose interest in the film providing it with little marketing and not even presenting a panel at Comic-Con where Tarantino is well loved. But the film scored well at the box office, topping the weekend charts. Unlike "Thirst," which has only one more night in San Diego, "Inglourious Basterds" (the title is deliberately spelled wrong) looks to play for at least a couple weeks more. So go and enjoy.
