When I saw the first trailer for "Where the WIld Things Are" (opening October 16) it scared me. It scared me because I thought the wild things looked liked bad giant Muppets. But this second trailer looks more promising.
Maurice Sendak's fantastical children's tale about a disobedient little boy sent to bed without his supper and who then creates his own world inhabited by wild creatures that crown him as their ruler would seem perfect material for filmmaker Spike Jonze. Previously Jonze brought us the surreal universes of "Being John Malkovich" and "Adaptation." So entering a child's imagination would seem an ideal playground for him. But while the second trailer definitely raises my hopes I'm still not certain he has been able to pull it off. So I eagerly await the release of the film.
Newcomer Max Records plays the young boy Max and Catherine Keener (of "Being John Malkovich") is his mom. Records looks much sweeter than Sendak's drawings of Max, who always had a bit of a devilish glint. Providing voices for the Wild Things are Chris Cooper, James Gandolfini, Catherine O'Hara, Paul Dano, Lauren Ambrose, and Forest Whitaker. Trailer is courtesy of Warner Bros.
