KPBS film critic Beth Accomando says there's still a lot to see. ----------------------------------------------------- SDJFF 1 (ba) (1:16) The San Diego Jewish Film Festival comes to a close on Sunday night with the musical bio-pic "Who Do You Love" about Leonard and Phil Chess. SDJFF 1A (:14) Chess Records bring you rock and roll's newest sensation Mr. Bo Didley… (song begins) This American success story is a definite crowd pleaser and boasts a rockin' soundtrack. But if you are looking for headier stuff festival chair Helen Fleming suggests you check out Justin Strawhand's "War Against the Weak," a look at 80 years of eugenics and how false science paved the way for Hitler's final solution. SDJFF 1B (:29) This is a documentary that is not only eye opening and enlightening but it gives you an opportunity to learn something new and hear from the filmmaker. We also have a noted professor of medical genetics from UCSD, Dr. Trey Ideker, so they will discuss the history of the field of eugenics and relate it to the current science of genetics and medical genetics as it relates to our world today. The San Diego Jewish Film Festival comes to a close on Sunday night with the musical bio-pic "Who Do You Love" about Leonard and Phil Chess. The film stars Alessandro Nivola plays Leonard Chess. This American success story is a definite crowd pleaser and boasts a rockin' soundtrack. But if you are looking for headier stuff festival chair Helen Fleming suggests you check out Justin Strawhand's "War Against the Weak," a look at 80 years of eugenics and how false science paved the way for Hitler's final solution.
"This is a documentary that is not only eye opening and enlightening but it gives you an opportunity to learn something new and hear from the filmmaker," says Fleming, "We also have a noted professor of medical genetics from UCSD, Dr. Trey Ideker, he will be participating in a panel with the director, and a representative of the anti-defamation league, Rick Barton. So they will discuss the history of the field of eugenics and relate it to the current science of genetics and medical genetics as it relates to our world today."
