Today is Leap Day, the extra day that only happens once every four years. It brings an extra day to 2012.
Leap Day inspired Adam Gimbel of the San Diego band Rookie Card to memorialize it in song.
Gimbel sings about a "leapling," someone born on Feb. 29. His song is titled, “2/29."
A few lines of the lyrics read, “2/29. It’s never too late to say that you’ll be mine. So you think it’s rough being born near Christmas? Try coming out on a day that doesn’t exist in three years out of four.”
The song details having to grow up faster than everyone else and having “the calendar pass you by.” Many people born on the 29th celebrate on March 1.
The song has gained a large following. The Honor Society of Leap Year Babies calls it the anthem for people born on this day.
Rookie Card has been on hiatus for a few years while Gimbel has been working on other projects with different groups. They wanted to get together and play again but something always got in the way.
So when people started asking if the band was going to perform “2/29” this year, it was the perfect excuse. Rookie Card will perform the song tonight at the Riviera Supper Club in La Mesa.
