'Frontera Project'

Theater
The Old Globe will host performances in partnership with crossborder theater companies, Tijuana Hace Teatro and New Feet Productions. The project, "Frontera Project," is an interactive, bilingual experience in both English and Spanish. The project as a whole is a collection of stories about the U.S.-Mexico border. Using theater, music, movement, play and audience contributions, the cast deliver vital and beautiful stories of the borderlands.

Details: Four performances: 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday; and 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 1-4. The Old Globe, 1363 Old Globe Way, Balboa Park. $12.

Note: Rock 'n' Roll Marathon road closures may impact traffic around Balboa Park Sunday. Many North Park area surface street closures are expected to lift before noon. Details here.

'Once Upon a Book Fair'

Books
North County gets a book fair this weekend! California Center for the Arts Escondido's Art and Education Studios space will host this festival featuring more than 75 authors representing a wide variety of genres, including children's books. Three scheduled author spotlights are regional thriller writer T. Jefferson Parker at 11 a.m.; paranormal romance writer Linda Thomas-Sundstrom at 1:15 p.m.; and thriller writer Matt Coyle.

Details: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 3. CA Center for the Arts Escondido, 340 N. Escondido Blvd., Escondido. Free.

Arts Fishing Club, Homes at Night, Dori Valentine @ Soda Bar

Music, Indie
Nashville-based alt rockers Arts Fishing Club (great name) are on tour in anticipation of their forthcoming album, "Rothko Sky" (also a great name), due out June 16. AFC will likely win over fans of The Head and the Heart and Mt. Joy, with earnest songwriting and a relaxed, melancholy sound. Supporting acts are Homes at Night, who are also from Nashville and singer-songwriter Dori Valentine.

Details: 7:30 p.m. (doors) on Friday, June 2. Soda Bar, 3615 El Cajon Blvd., City Heights. $22.

'BODYTRAFFIC'

Dance
Many of the touring contemporary dance companies we see are from New York, so it's nice to see Southern California represented by the Los Angeles-based BODYTRAFFIC. The ultra-stylish company draws on the essence of L.A. in their dance. In this program presented by the La Jolla Music Society, they'll perform four works of choreography: Matthew Neenan's "A Million Voices," Micaela Taylor's "Snap!," Richard Siegal's "o2joy," and Alejandro Cerruda's "Pacopepepluto."

Details: 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday, June 1-2. Baker-Baum Concert Hall at The Conrad, 7600 Fay Ave., La Jolla. $50-$90.

Bach Collegium: One Day Only with Sylvia Berry

Music, Classical
Sylvia Berry, fortepianist, will once again join Bach Collegium for a special performance on Saturday with a small ensemble of Bach Collegium musicians: soprano Stefanie Moore, with strings Andrew McIntosh, Andrew Waid and Heather Vorwerck. What's a fortepiano? Well, it's a piano-like instrument that's the earliest version of what we consider a piano, dating back to the late 17th century. The salon-style concert will feature Mozart, Beethoven and more.

Details: 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 3. All Souls' Episcopal Church, 1475 Catalina Blvd., Pt Loma. $15-$60.

More weekend arts events we're covering:

The La Jolla Playhouse world premiere of "Love All," the Billie Jean King play, opens in previews this Saturday night. I watched the entire vintage broadcast video of King's 1973 "Battle of the Sexes" match against self-proclaimed "male chauvinist" Bobby Riggs to prepare for my conversation with the play's director, Marc Bruni. Check out the story here.
