The Secretary of Homeland Security says California will get about $7.5 million to help out law enforcement along the U.S. Mexico border. The announcement came during the secretary's speech Tuesday on U.S. Mexico border issues.
Secretary Janet Napolitano says a total of $30 million in grant money will be used to increase law enforcement's presence along the entire Southwest border.
She says the funds will also help bolster cooperation between local, state and federal authorities.
Napolitano says just as law enforcement must share responsibility for the Southwest border, the region cannot be seen as something to be dealt with separately.
"And it begins with the paradigm that you cannot segregate the southwest border from the rest of our nation. Nor can we segregate our efforts along the Southwest border from the efforts and partnership we must have with Mexico."
Napolitano praised the U.S. and Mexico for their unprecedented cooperation to combat drug cartels.
