San Diego will get a chance this week to give their input into plans to expand the trolley. San Diego Association of Governments, SANDAG, will host two public meetings.
The proposed mid-coast trolley line will begin at the Old Town station. It will run north and have up to eight stops, including stations at Balboa Avenue, UCSD and University Town Center. There are three optional routes under consideration. All of them include two stops on the UCSD campus. The last time San Diego extended its trolley system was 2005 when the green line connected the San Diego State University campus.
SANDAG'S Anne Steinberger said the public meetings are meant to get feedback on proposed routes. She said the trolley project is not far off.
"If all goes according to plan," she said, "we're looking at 2013 to start construction and opening as early as 2016."
San Diego hopes federal transportation dollars will provide half of the $1.6 billion cost of the trolley extension. The public meetings take place Tuesday at UCSD and Wednesday at University Town Center.
