Residents near San Diego International Airport were cautioned today they may hear noises or feel vibrations as piledriving begins this week for the foundation of the expansion of Terminal 2.
About 20 piles will be installed each day, which will provide support for the 445,000-square-foot addition to Terminal 2, according to the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority.
Work is expected to last for several months.
The Airport Authority issued a statement saying "this activity may potentially impact airport neighbors and passengers traveling through Terminal 2, and we ask for you patience and understanding as we proceed with this phase of construction."
Pile driving activity will take place to the west of the existing terminal on weekdays, from about 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., according to the Airport Authority.
The $1 billion so-called "Green Build" expansion project will lead to 10 new gates at Terminal 2 and a dual-level road that separates arriving and departing passengers. Work is scheduled to be completed in 2013.
