California's Population Increases Slightly

California’s population increased a tiny bit compared to last year according to a new report from the Department of Finance. Head of Demographics Research, Mary Heim said 80 percent of the growth can be attributed to births. She said there are not a lot of people moving in or out of the state, largely because of the economy.

“Moving, you have to have a prospect or an opportunity some place else, and since things haven’t really picked up I think people are just staying put,” Heim said.

Heim also said California’s population grew by 0.9 percent this year, compared to 0.8 percent the year before.

She says California’s population has been leveling out over the last few years. In fact the birth rate has been the biggest source of growth since 2002.
