SD Unemployment Rate Increases

The unemployment rate was up just slightly in San Diego County last month, 10.4 percent, compared to 10.3 percent in October, according to figures released today by the state Employment Development Department.

The 10.4 percent number compares to 12.4 percent for California as a whole and 9.3 percent nationwide.

There was some good news as the number of non-farm jobs in the county rose by 3,700 since October, 3,200 of which were in retail businesses. The gain was only 100 positions since November 2009.

"While far too many Californians remain out of work, I am encouraged by some of the positive signs we are seeing in our economy," Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said. "October set a record for California exports; California has gained construction jobs for two consecutive months, the first time since 2006; and as today's report indicates, we have seen a year-over-year increase in jobs in the state."
