San Diego Unified held its ninth annual summer commencement ceremony.

Most of San Diego Unified’s graduates donned caps and gowns in June.

But parents, friends, siblings and others filled the auditorium at Lincoln High School on Friday to cheer on almost 80 San Diego Unified grads who couldn’t walk with their classmates when the school year ended. Most had classes left to finish or the state high school exit exam to pass.

Some, like Garfield High School graduate Julio Gomez, 18, who finished a required earth science class this summer weren't always sure they’d make it.

“At times I did, at times I just wanted to give up but all my friends, teachers, staff just kept pushing me,” Gomez said.

Morse High School graduate Dajah Williams, 18, was always certain she’d reach her goal of graduating and joining the Navy but having the option to walk during the summer meant a lot to her “'cause my family are here to watch me walk and they could actually see me finish,” she said.

Students finishing graduation requirements late were mailed diplomas before the district started summer commencement ceremonies in 2005.
