ALPINE - A suspicious backpack at an Alpine middle was determined not to be a threat after a bomb arson squad investigated the incident, a San Diego Sheriff's Department spokesman said.
Lt. Jason Vickery said the backpack at Joan Macqueen Middle School turned out to be a "false alarm."
The department received an alarm call at 6:01 a.m. Friday.
Deputies at the middle school saw a backpack they deemed was suspicious and blocked off the entrance to the school.
Students and teachers who were in route to the school were diverted to nearby Boulder Oaks Elementary School.
