Combining education, entertainment and a wide variety of San Diego County wildlife, the 3 coastal lagoons of Carlsbad - Agua Hedionda, Batiquitos and Buena Vista - are hosting the first Migratory Bird Festival.
Nikki Weaver is with the Agua Hedionda Lagoon.
"Our lagoons are all a very important resting stops for birds that are migrating, flying day and night trying to make it through their journeys. And only half of migrating birds survive their migrating journey. I don't think people realize there's so many hazards right now for these birds," she says.
Research has shown that migratory bird species are in decline, facing a growing number of threats on their migration routes and in both their summer and winter habitats.
Weaver says tomorrow's festival includes birding hikes, nature walks, bird crafts, live bird shows and a photo exhibition featuring lagoon birds.
"We just wanted to bring awareness to how important the lagoons are and some people don't really realize all the different levels of activity and different levels of life that these lagoons support," she says.
She says other activities include a mock migration adventure, feather and raptor crafts, home-made bird-feeders, bird videos, and a bird-calling demonstration.
