Hearing Set For La Jolla Children's Pool Rope Barrier

The California Coastal Commission Wednesday decides whether a temporary rope barrier at the La Jolla Children's Pool should be removed.

The San Diego Council of Divers, Friend's of Children's Pool and San Diego resident John Leek are appealing the Coastal Commissions decision approving the rope barrier.

The rope and signs are placed at the beach during pupping season between December and May each year.

The groups favor continued beach access. They say seals and divers have existed at the location for many years. But Friends of the Seals president Ellen Shively said disturbing the animals during the crucial birthing time is harmful.

"Without the barrier, people will go down and disturb the seals, sometimes inadvertently not knowing that as wild animals, they have unpredictable behavior," said Shively.

The San Diego City Council was granted the authority by state law to determine how the Children's Pool should be used.

The Council has yet to take action, but a committee is expected to consider the Children's Pool issue next week.

In 2007 he was selected a National Press Foundation fellow for Understanding Violent Weather II program. The seminars were held at the National Weather Center in Norman, Okla. In 2008 he spoke at a UC San Diego conference on U.S. National Security as part of the school’s Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation. Ed led a discussion with the 18 foreign government officials and academics about the political debate over climate change. In 2010, Ed was elected to a three-year term on the board of the San Diego Press Club.
