People opposed to the Interstate 5 expansion between La Jolla and Oceanside are organizing. Opposition groups will hold a town hall meeting Thursday to talk about the project.

The I-5 expansion would add up to six lanes of traffic over about 30 miles.

Now opposition groups are mobilizing to kill the project. They say the expansion would hurt the environment and create more traffic gridlock in the North County.

Duncan McFetridge is the director of Save Our Forests and Ranchlands. He'll be a featured speaker at tonight's meeting. He said CalTrans' attempt to ease traffic congestion is misguided.

"It's for, they claim, congestion relief," he said. "But the evidence is overwhelming that it produces congestion. So we will literally have 14 lanes of a parking lot after they build this thing."

Expansion opponents are planning to mount legal challenges to the project.

The expansion is projected to cost between $3.5 billion and $4.5 billion.
