An environmental group says it's likely a weekend fish kill -- a large die-off of marine life -- in a section of the San Diego River was due to natural causes.

During its biannual survey of the river last weekend, the San Diego River Park Foundation was alerted to dead fish at an area of the river in Mission Valley.

Shannon Quigley-Redmond, who is with the Foundation, said more than 150 fish, ranging from perch to carp, were killed.

"It really seems from our investigation as well San Diego County and City of San Diego's investigation, that it's the depleted low oxygen due to the really warm weather we had," said Quigley-Redmond.

Quigley-Redmond said the growth of algae, a result of that unusually hot weather, reduced oxygen levels in that part of the river.
