The massive storm moving into Southern California is bringing worries of mudslides where recent wildfires left mountainsides exposed. Mandatory evacuation orders were issued for about a 1,000 homes near Los Angeles Thursday.
In San Diego, the storm is making the morning drive tough, and several flood and wind advisories are in effect. But Pat Abbot, professor emeritus of geology at San Diego State University said San Diego is less prone to mudslides this time around.
"Our land is certainly dry, but on the good news side, we haven't had a big fire or a major area where we've stripped a lot of the vegetation off the ground, so there's been some time for things to grow a bit," he said.
The National Weather Service says heavy showers will continue through Friday afternoon before the intensity of the storm starts to lighten up as it moves into Saturday.
There's also strong winds and a chance of thunderstorms Friday.
