Higher than average surf with sets of up to 12 feet are expected along the San Diego County coastline Tuesday.
A National Weather Service high surf advisory is set to expire at 2 a.m. Wednesday. Surf of 5 to 9 feet and sets that could reach 10 to 12 feet are expected throughout the majority of the advisory period, with the highest hitting south of Carlsbad.
"A large west-northwest swell with a long period will peak today and generate high surf," according to the weather service. "The swell and surf will gradually decrease tonight and Wednesday."
The waves are expected increase the potential for dangerous swimming conditions, very strong rip currents, coastal flooding during high tide and minor beach erosion, forecasters said. The waves may also top jetties and coastal rock structures at times.
