The recent rains not only flooded San Diego streets, but also caused erosion along Sunset Cliffs.
The cliffs may look solid, but when it rains the runoff is soaked up in the sandy soil and the weight can cause cracks along the edge of the cliffs.
Surfer Adam Pflaumer said simple danger signs are enough for people to make their own decisions about how safe it is along the edge.
“Part of the beauty is that you leave it a little more natural and maybe you move the signs back a little bit, that’s about the extent that I would do,” Pflaumer said. “If that chunk is about to fall in move the sign back 10 feet.”
Erosion may make it impossible to access some beaches and Pflaumer thinks that could be a good thing.
“You know, some places are inaccessible and if this place becomes inaccessible then those who want to surf here bad enough will make it happen and it may keep out others that aren’t willing to take on that risk,” Pflaumer said.
