Temperatures in parts of San Diego County may again push into potential record-breaking territory Tuesday ahead of gusty winds expected to develop in the mountains and upper deserts midweek.
A few daily high temperature records fell around San Diego County on Monday. Highs of 91 degrees in El Cajon and of 89 degrees in Vista were each 3 degrees higher than previous records for Feb. 15, set in 2014 and 1985, respectively; 90-degree high in Borrego Springs was 1 degree higher than the prior milestone, set in 2014; and also topped by 1 degree were previous highs of 78 degrees in Oceanside, 86 degrees in Chula Vista, both set in 1985, and of 88 degrees in Escondido, set in 1943, according to the National Weather Service.
Forecasters said several daily high temperature records could be broken or tied again Tuesday, including in San Diego, El Cajon, Escondido, Vista, Ramona and Chula Vista.
High temperatures Tuesday were forecast to be 79 to 84 degrees near the coast, 88 to 93 degrees inland, 90 to 95 in the western valleys, 85 to 90 near the foothills, 75 to 84 degrees in the mountains and 87 to 92 degrees in the deserts.
"High pressure aloft and weakening offshore flow will continue well above average high temperatures today with record or near high temperatures in many locations," according to the weather service.
Also on Monday, peak wind gusts in the mountains ranged from 35 mph on Mount Laguna to 55 mph on Sill Hill, and from 35 to 40 mph in the inland valleys, according to unofficial National Weather Service data. Gusts of 40 mph were recorded at Las Flores near the coast.
Light winds are expected in most of the county Tuesday, but an approaching trough of low pressure is expected to lead to cooler temperatures and gustier winds on Wednesday, forecasters said.
A National Weather Service wind advisory for the mountains is set to be in effect from 6 p.m. Wednesday to 6 a.m. Thursday. Winds of 20 to 30 miles per hour will be possible, as will gusts that could reach 60 mph in some areas.
"Strong gusty southwest to west winds will develop over the mountains and deserts of San Bernardino County on Wednesday, then spread southward into the mountains of Riverside and San Diego counties Wednesday night," according to the weather service.
Wednesday night, temperatures are expected to cool to near average as the low pressure trough moves inland. A chance of showers is also in the forecast late Wednesday into Thursday along and west of the mountains, according to the weather service.
