Temperatures will be around seasonal averages Monday throughout San Diego County, but highs will gradually rise as the week progresses and a heat wave is expected to grip the region this upcoming weekend.
A slowly building ridge of high pressure over the southwestern United States will cause temperatures to rise from Wednesday through Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.
The heat wave is expected to be similar to the record-breaking one that gripped Southern California two weekends ago, but current projections show it won't be quite as strong, forecasters said.
Highs in the county deserts will climb to 116 on Thursday, then 119 on Sunday, according to the NWS. The mercury in the western valleys is expected to top out in the mid-to-high 90s on Sunday, while highs near the foothills could hit 103 on both Saturday and Sunday.
High temperatures today are forecast to reach 76 degrees near the coast, 82 inland, 86 in the western valleys, 94 near the foothills, 96 in the mountains and 114 in the deserts.
