The latest addition to UC San Diego’s Stuart Collection of site-specific sculptures, “Fallen Star” was raised 100 feet into the air on Tuesday morning, and attached to the seventh-floor roof of an existing building.
"The engineering on this project has been really complex," said Mary Beebe, director of the Stuart Collection at UCSD in a press release. "It's probably the most complex we've ever undertaken and it is fitting that it will be in residence at the Jacobs School, not far from another of the Start Collection's engineering feats, Tim Hawkinson's 'Bear.'"
Suh was born in Korea and attended Seoul National University before going on to earn a BFA in sculpture from Yale University. He works are part of museum collections around the world, according to a release by UCSD.
Suh's work, Beebe explained, explores the cultural meaning of space and the relationship between the personal and the collective.
The “Fallen Star” project will be furnished inside, and the exterior will include a garden on the roof. The project is slated for completion between January and March 2012.
