Small Business Saturday Keeps Money In the Local Economy

As shoppers race through big box stores hunting for bargains this Black Friday, another day of good deals await consumers on "Small Business Saturday."

It's meant to encourage shoppers to buy at local retail outlets over corporate locations.

North Park Main Street Vice President Matt Gordon said patronizing small businesses keeps shoppers' bucks in the local economy.

One such small business is Aloha Sunday, a clothing and housewares store in North Park. One of its two owners, Kahana Kalama, said shops like his are unique because of the personal interaction they provide.

"We love talking to customers," Kalama said. "It's great to make that connection."

Although small businesses are not as dependent on this shopping week as big retailers, Kalama said Small Business Saturday shines a light" on communities, such as North Park.
