The San Diego County Office of Ethics and Compliance is investigating racist social media posts, allegedly written by a county employee responsible for helping low-income people get housing subsidies.
The NAACP San Diego branch brought the allegations to the attention of the County Board of Supervisors.
The group say an African American disabled woman filed a complaint to them about the county employee after she said she was harshly questioned by him, regarding her Section 8 housing voucher.
The NAACP say its investigation later found the man had posted and shared racist memes to his personal social media accounts.
KPBS decided not to name the employee because we were unable to independently verify his social media accounts.
"Section 8 voucher holders are some of the most vulnerable in our community," said Francine Maxwell, acting president of NAACP San Diego. "The fact that she was African American and disabled, it was super-alarming to see all the African American slants that he had."
The posts include memes about African Americans, illegal immigration and Muslims. One depicted Senator Kamala Harris as a prostitute and another said Michelle Obama was "fluent in ghetto".
"We don't feel that a person with that much power should be exhibiting extremist views in his personal life or his professional life<' Maxwell said. "Sometimes those two aren't separate, they mirror each other."
A county spokesperson says they are looking into "what we knew and when we knew it".
