San Diego County ranks 15th among California's 58 counties in terms of the overall health of its residents.
The health survey, by the University of Wisconsin, rated every county in the country for overall health. It also examined many factors that influence health, like rates of smoking, obesity and teen pregnancy.
In California, Marin County had the best overall health. Del Norte county, on the Oregon Border, came in last.
Julie Willems Van Dijk is with the University of Wisconsin's Population Health Institute. She said the survey examined insurance coverage and health resources, but they were only two among many factors.
"Clearly medical care is an important part of health," she said. "But it is not the only part of health."
Van Dijk said there is a clear connection between income level and good health. The survey cited poverty and levels of education as factors that influence health.
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation was a partner in the survey.
