San Diego's population is getting older. A senior summit will be held Saturday in Scripps Ranch to talk about the challenges of serving an elderly population.
The summit is being targeted at service providers and agencies that work with the elderly. Ellen Schmeding is with San Diego County's Aging and Independent Services office. She says the fastest growing segment of the population is people 85 and older.
"With the advances in medicine, more people are living longer and in better health. Though the increase in longevity has also brought about a big influx of individuals suffering, for example, from dementia," she said.
Schmeding says her office periodically conducts hearings to see what seniors are concerned about. She says the high cost of living and the fear of running out of money are common concerns.
