During San Diego’s mayor’s race, so-called independent committees spent big supporting and opposing candidates. Now, the city of San Diego’s Ethics Commission is considering tightening restrictions on the money-flush organizations.
Members of the public who wish to weigh in on the proposed changes can attend the meeting at 5 p.m. on the 12th floor of San Diego City Hall.
The Ethics Commission will consider several amendments at Thursday night’s meeting, including one to tighten restrictions on how independent committees can use candidates’ campaign materials. During the recently concluded mayoral election, such committees, which are prohibited from coordinating with candidates’ campaigns, spent more than the candidates’ themselves on advertisements and other campaign-related activities.
Other proposals relate to committee record keeping, vendor debt and the disclosure of donors on issue ads.
A final vote on the amendments isn’t expected until this summer.
