News stories come and go but kittens videos last forever.
Cute kitten videos are a major delight and time-waster on the Internet. Groups of kittens can make a crowd assemble and inspire grown men to speak in baby-talk.
So how in the world could kittens ever be a problem? When there are just too many of them, like right now during kitten season at shelters around the country.
Luckily, San Diego is home to the country's first 24-hour kitten nursery. It's designed to save kittens that would have been euthanized.
Watch the video below to get an inside look at the nursery.
The San Diego Humane Society says since it opened in 2009, the nursery has saved more than 6,000 kittens and is on pace to rescue 1,500 kittens this season.
Kitten season, the period when kittens are typically born, peaks from late spring through late summer. Because it is currently peak season, there are many kittens up for adoption at the San Diego Humane Society right now.
The nursery is part of Dr. Gary Weitzman’s “Getting to Zero” initiative, a plan to save the life of every healthy and treatable animal across all county shelters.
