John Weisbarth is here . He is host, Tiny House Nation. And average to the apartment is somewhere between four and 500 ft.². How does that compare to the size of a tiny home Mark it is really just a home that is Uber efficient but a more common definition. On our show we probably average most of the homes and we've done 70 and between that 300 400 ft.² range. What can you get into a tiny home question doesn't have a shower, bed, kitchen, TV?I do get that question a lot. We talked about it. A tiny home is a home that's just a little smaller. It is everything. You don't compromise anything. Maybe extra space but there is a kitchen, sleeping area, living room, bathroom, running water, everything you need. When I talk about a tiny home, really is everything you need and nothing you don't.How much does it cost questionThat's like asking how much does a car cost.It depends you can spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars or pick up one for $5000. Save estimate for the houses that we do is going to be more expensive for a foundation tiny home but I would say between $40,000 and $70,000 tricked out is a reasonable amount to think about spending on a mobile tiny home. This event originated from your own desire to own a tiny home. What you feel like a tiny home is a good option?I stumble across tiny home living by accident. It ended up with the studio that was 270 ft.² which sounds impossible. I figured out how to do it and I started to discover that I have a lot more time to invest in the things that I cared about in my life. I did not get distracted as much. I just became a lot more efficient and I thought there is something to this. Shortly after I stumbled across the tiny home movement. What a stunning in the way of you owning a tiny home in San Diego question markIt is not legal yet. So it's two things that were working on here with this event is opening up a dialogue with people who are unfamiliar with the term. Perhaps they've seen the great show that John hosts. It's a very fun show and I think it shows really well how it's possible to live small. Public perception is something that we want to look at with this event but the other thing is the legal challenges and were fortunate to have some of our elected officials come out to view the homes in hopefully help us make the changes in the billing codes -- encodes. There are regulations that make tiny homes a problem.Literally every county across this country has minimum building requirements. A lot of those laws are antiquated. There are things that were set up years ago and they were designed to protect the consumer from slumlords and they set up these -- if this is going to be a dwelling, and has to be at least an X amount of square feet big. That is different all over the country. What is happening now especially given the housing crisis that we have affordability crisis and also remember when you're in a tiny house, it's a smaller footprint. You're also creating a small environmental footprint. There's all these things that have lined up to say that it's time to take a look at these zoning laws and do they really make sense and do they apply to what a tiny house is? Because these houses are very well appointed. When you're building smaller, you can afford to use higher and materials. These are very nice places. So were not talking about a slumlord or some small thing. Were talking about something that looks very nice. Don't be told how a tiny house looks counts because the perception of it is very important. What are people going to see in this display of tiny homes between Thursday and Saturday? We are staging what were calling a micro village tiny home village. We figure it takes at least three to have a village. So we will have three different versions of a tiny home for people to view and tour and kind of try on for size and really get that experience of seeing how you can fit everything you need into a small space. If you think about it, how much time do you spend in your dining room? For those of you that have a large home. How much time do you spend in the living room that's more formal? You only do that with company. Most of the time is spent in your kitchen, living room and your bedroom. That is what you have in a tiny home you have all three. The display of tiny homes takes place tomorrow through Saturday at market Creek Plaza and I've been speaking with Ellen Stone and John Weisbarth, host, Tiny House Nation . Thank you both.Thank you.
Tiny homes could be one of the solutions to San Diego's housing shortage.
A common definition of a tiny home is a home that is 400 square feet and under. John Weisbarth, the host of Tiny House Nation on the FYI Network, said a tiny home has a kitchen, living room, sleeping area and a bathroom just like a regular home.
"When I talk about a tiny home, it's everything you need and nothing that you don't," Weisbarth said.
Weisbarth estimated that the average cost of a tiny home on wheels is $40,000 to $70,000.
Tiny homes will be on display at an event on Thursday through Saturday at Market Creek Plaza at Euclid and Market. On Friday, workshops will also be held on tiny homes and modular construction. The event is part of San Diego Architecture and Design Month, also known as Archtoberfest.
It is currently not legal to build a tiny home in the city or county due to zoning and building codes. The goal of the event is to raise awareness among elected officials and community members about tiny homes and the needed changes.
Weisbarth said there are a few reasons why it is time to change the zoning laws, including California's housing shortage and the role larger, less energy-efficient homes have in contributing to climate change.
Ellen Stone is the chair of Tiny Home Central, a coalition of volunteers and nonprofits. The coalition is hosting the tiny home event.
Stone and Weisbarth will join Midday Edition on Wednesday to talk about what they see as the benefits of tiny home living.
