This past week, more than 600 sailors participated in the Naval Base San Diego annual Martin Luther King Jr. walk/run. This was an opportunity for the sailors who work at the base, which is the Navy's premier Pacific Fleet surface force installation, to promote the Navy's culture of fitness and reflect on what Martin Luther King Jr. contributed to society, reports Navy Compass.
There have been military salutes of various kinds and sizes to King across the nation this past week. But there's a bit of irony here, too, given the fact that King was not only a champion of civil rights, but also an outspoken anti-war activist.
