Somali Pirate Massacre Has San Diego County Connection

Still reeling from the news of the murders of four Americans killed Monday by Somali Pirates? Me, too. It turns out the story hits closer to home than we realized. Not only were two of those killed, Jean and Scott Adam, residents of Orange County. But Scott Adam's daughter, Emily Elizabeth Sem, lives in Escondido. San Diego ABC affiliate 10News reported that the FBI had been talking with Sem at her home.

The Sem family released this statement to the public:

This statement shows Sem is filled with gratitude towards the military and the Navy's involvement in trying to rescue the hostages. What's interesting, though, is that the blame game has started anyway. One of the pirates involved in the Adams' hijacking spoke with the Los Angeles Times and insisted the only reason the hostages were killed was because the U.S. military fired at them first. The military disputes this, of course.

Just to bring this post back to the lives of the victims, here's a photo taken by Jean Adam while on the Quest of the legendary "green flash." She posted it on her website chronicling her voyage. Lovely.
